About the Tour

Three Decades of Opening Doors

Historic homes on Eutaw Place, Reservoir Hill

The Historic Reservoir Hill Garden & Home Tour began in the mid-1990s when longtime residents Paul and Glenda Gentner sought a way to showcase the neighborhood's beauty while supporting community efforts.

"What started as a grassroots neighborhood event has grown into one of Baltimore's most anticipated annual traditions."

Now in its 30th year, the tour invites visitors to explore stunning private gardens, architecturally rich historic homes, and the vibrant community spaces that make Reservoir Hill one of Baltimore's most treasured neighborhoods. The tour is self-guided and open to all.

Proceeds support the Reservoir Hill Association (RHA)

Thirty Years of Open Doors

The Story Behind the Tour

June 7, 1975 marks the beginning of a lifelong love story between Paul and Glenda Gentner and the Reservoir Hill community. On that day — now fifty-one years ago — the couple purchased a stately three-story, 19th-century row home, a decision that helped define a legacy of neighborhood pride, preservation, and community engagement that endures to this day.

In the mid-1990s, Glenda gathered with neighbors and proposed a creative way to raise funds for the community while sharing its hidden beauty with the wider world. What began as the "Secret Garden Tour" — a modest walk through private garden spaces — has grown into a beloved Baltimore tradition.

"I still have all the flyers, from 1999 until now."— Paul Gentner

Over thirty years, the Tour has been carried forward by something larger than any single organization — sustained by rotating hosts, block associations, neighborhood volunteers, civic partners, and the countless residents who have opened their homes and gardens season after season.

The Reservoir Hill Association has had the honor of stewarding the event since 2022, but the Tour's legacy belongs to all of Reservoir Hill.

"It gave me a chance to meet a lot of the neighbors because I was new to the neighborhood. I felt comfortable. I just wanted to be a part of this great thing."— Randy Howell-Bey, Reservoir Hill resident

Reservoir Hill

A National Historic District
with Centuries of Stories

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and protected by Baltimore City's Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP), Reservoir Hill's approximately 32-block streetscape represents one of the largest intact collections of Victorian and Edwardian row house architecture on the East Coast.

c. 1790

Dr. Solomon Birckhead establishes Mt. Royal — a limestone mansion with terraced gardens — on land purchased from Declaration of Independence signer Charles Carroll.

1860–1862

Druid Hill Park (764 acres) and the Mount Royal Reservoir are established, drawing wealthy Baltimore families to the neighborhood. The 4th U.S. Colored Troops train at Camp Belger on the neighborhood's edge.

1870s–1910s

The neighborhood reaches its architectural apex — Victorian, Edwardian, Queen Anne, and Romanesque Revival homes line wide, tree-canopied boulevards. Baltimore's German-Jewish community establishes five synagogues here.

1940s–1970s

Post-war suburbanization triggers decline. Grand single-family homes are subdivided. But unlike many neighborhoods, Reservoir Hill is spared the urban renewal wrecking ball — its density and architecture survive intact.

1994 – Today

Homeowners launch the first Secret Garden Tour. Thirty years of community investment, historic preservation, and the annual tour have driven one of Baltimore's most sustained urban renewals.

"Driving through the neighborhood's grid of streets, it is hard to imagine how so stately homes located directly south of Druid Hill Park — minutes from all of Baltimore's main commercial and cultural centers — would ever become an undesirable place to live."

Alice B.

2026 Tour Mascot

Our 2026 mascot is inspired by the legendary Alice B. Toklas — muse, hostess, and culinary icon of 1920s Paris. At her famous salon at 27 rue de Fleurus, Alice arranged the flowers, set the table, and made sure Picasso, Hemingway, and Matisse felt at home. We think she would have loved Reservoir Hill.

🌸

The Ultimate Hostess

Alice managed the most celebrated salon in Paris — welcoming the greatest artists and writers of the 20th century with warmth, elegance, and exquisite taste. That's exactly the spirit of opening your home and garden to neighbors and strangers alike.

Synonymous with Food & Garden

Alice's celebrated cookbook and her lifelong love of cooking and gardening make her a perfect fit for a tour that celebrates the beauty of tended spaces and the joy of community gathering.

Elegant, Unique & Historic

Like Reservoir Hill itself, Alice's story is about a unique, elegant, and historic place that became a center of culture and creativity — a gathering point for the remarkable.
